Huge thanks to Dr Biku Ghosh
The foundations of our charity come strongly from all being involved previously in the Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health link (www.ethiopiagwentlink.org ). The Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Care link was established by Dr Biku Ghosh OBE in 2000 and originated as the Dilla Link. Dr Biku Ghosh developed a long and lasting professional relationship and also friendship with Dr Aberra, Southern Ethiopia. Please take a look at the Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Link website for details of twelve years of projects helping, supporting and sharing knowledge with partners in Ethiopia to improve healthcare outcomes.
All of the trustees of midwives@ethiopia feel priveledged to have attended Ethiopia with the Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Link and have been involved as part of a team delivering training packages and also in fundraising. The experiences gained and the friendships that developed along the way became firm building blocks for midwives@ethiopia. Sadly, due to the forthcoming retirement of some key figures in the existing Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Link, and after huge debate and soul searching by these same people, as well as partners across the globe, the exisiting Link has made the difficult decision to discontinue the work it has been doing, in its current capacity. It has been a hugely productive, successful and unforgettable twelve years for the link as a whole, and the legacy of the Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Link will no doubt continue in many forms.
Although midwives@ethiopia is a new charity, all the trustees are grateful for the opportunites afforded to them by the Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Link. Midwives@ethiopia is a new, independent charity with exciting strategies and fundraising ideas. We are very keen to build on the foundations gained from the Southern Ethiopia Gwent Health Link but have also already developed new contacts and we are exploring new ways forward. We would like to encourage midwives and student midwives from all areas across the UK to get involved and hope to develop many new links with other organsiations.
We welcome any support you can offer. If you would like to fund raise for us, sponsor one of us, donate or help in anyway at all we would be very pleased to hear from you.
All the money raised goes directly to buying simple, effective teaching equipment and running effective training courses for midwifery tutors, midwives and health extension workers in Southern Ethiopia.
